Overview

-----------------------------------------------------------

QuikBACC is a utility developed specifically for users of BPI Accounting software. We designed QuikBACC to dramatically speed up the backup process by reducing the number of diskettes needed to make a backup of BPI company data.

QuikBACC uses file compression technology licensed from PKWARE, Inc. to compress BPI Accounting company data files.

Users will save anywhere from 60% to 80% the number of disks otherwise required to make a BPI company backup.

The program operates from within BPI. In fact, QuikBACC installs straight into the Manage Company Data - Backup Company and Restore Company commands, so there are no new commands to learn.

You just make backups from within BPI the way you always have -- but you only use about one fourth the number of disks!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Installing QuikBACC

-----------------------------------------------------------

Place the diskette labeled "QuikBACC" in drive A: (or B:)

Exit BPI Accounting.

Get to a MSDOS prompt. If you are running under Windows, click on Start / Programs / MSDOS Prompt to get to a DOS prompt.

Make sure that the currently selected drive is the same drive where your BPI programs are installed (for example, C:). It does not matter what directory is currently selected.

At the DOS prompt enter:

A:INSTALL

(Enter B:INSTALL if the QuikBACC diskette is in B:)

You will be asked the following questions before the installation begins:

* Print the manual now (Y or N)?

If you want to print the QuikBACC user manual now, make sure your printer is turned on, is on-line, and is loaded with paper.

 * Install QuikBACC optimized for SPEED (Y or N)?

Answering Y to this prompt will cause QuikBACC to backup as quick as possible.

* Install QuikBACC optimized for SIZE (Y or N)?

Answering Y to this prompt will cause QuikBACC to use the least amount of disk space possible.

Note: If you answer N to both of the above prompts then QuikBACC will operate with a BALANCE between speed and size.

 * Perform verify on files as they are being backed up (Y or N)?

Answering Y to this prompt will cause QuikBACC to verify all files AS they are being backed up. This will maximize the reliability of the backup, but it will also take a little longer.

* Erase the contents of the target drive before backing up (Y or N)?

Answering Y to this prompt will cause QuikBACC to erase the contents of the target disk before the backup is made. If you are backing up to floppy disks and you want to minimize the number of disks it will take to backup, then you should answer Y to this question.

* Prompt for a password before backing up and restoring (Y or N)?

Answering Y to this prompt will cause QuikBACC to ask for a password each time you backup or restore your company data.

After answering Y or N to each of the above questions, QuikBACC will install itself and return to the DOS prompt.

If QuikBACC installs successfully, it will display a message that installation of QuikBACC is now complete.

(If you later want to optimize QuikBACC for something different, e.g., change from speed to size, you can reinstall QuikBACC again at any time and specify the new optimization.)

IF YOUR BPI PROGRAMS AND BPI DATA ARE ON TWO DIFFERENT DRIVES, you should install QuikBACC a second time to the drive where your BPI data resides. This will insure that BPI has access to all the QuikBACC files it needs when backing up and restoring.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Operating QuikBACC

-----------------------------------------------------------

To use QuikBACC, just use the Backup Company and Restore Company commands as you do normally. The Backup Company and Restore Company commands are options from the Manage Company Data command in the System Menu of BPI Accounting.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Backing Up with QuikBACC

-----------------------------------------------------------

Run the Backup Company command from the BPI system. After specifying the target or 'TO' drive, insert your first backup disk, press ENTER. Then press Y and ENTER to OK the screen.

QuikBACC compresses your data as it backs it up from your hard disk to your floppy disks. If the current floppy disk becomes full you will be prompted to insert the next backup disk.

After the backup is complete you will be asked if you want to Show Verify Test Results on the backed up data (Y or N)?

If you answer Y then you will be prompted to put in the last disk. After you press enter it will display each file with an OK beside it showing that it was backed up and verified properly. If any errors were found, it will say so after listing all the files.

None of your BPI Accounting data files are affected by either the file compression process or the backup process.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Restoring a QuikBACC Backup

-----------------------------------------------------------

Run the Restore Company command from the BPI system. After specifying the 'FROM' drive, insert your first backup disk, press ENTER. Then press Y and ENTER to OK the screen.

You will then be prompted to insert the last disk of the backup set and press a key. After it examines the last disk, you will be prompted again to insert the first disk.

QuikBACC uncompresses your data as it restores it from the floppy disk(s) to your hard disk. If there is more than one disk in the backup set, you will be prompted to insert remaining disks.

When the restore is complete, your BPI Accounting data will be ready to use.

Note that the Restore Company command requires that before you restore an existing company, you must either delete or rename the existing company. See the BPI Accounting documentation on the Restore Company command for details.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Deinstalling QuikBACC

-----------------------------------------------------------

If for some reason you want to deinstall QuikBACC, you may easily do so. Make sure the QuikBACC diskette is in drive A: or B:. Then, from the DOS prompt, enter

    A:DINSTALL

(Enter B:DINSTALL if the QuikBACC diskette is in B:)

This will remove all QuikBACC files so that BPI will backup and restore as it did prior to installing QuikBACC.

 -----------------------------------------------------------

Troubleshooting QuikBACC

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have difficulties using QuikBACC, check the following:

* If your BPI data is on a different drive than your BPI programs, be sure to install QuikBACC to the drive where your data resides. Then try QuikBACC again.

* Make sure the diskettes you are using are in good condition. QuikBACC cannot make good backups on disks that are worn out or otherwise unreliable. Periodically reformat the diskettes you recycle. Throw away any diskettes that do not format perfectly.

* QuikBACC needs some free space on your computer's HARD DRIVE in order to make a backup. If you receive `disk full' errors, free up space on your hard drive and try again.

* Make sure your CONFIG.SYS file has files=99 or higher, and buffers=30 or higher.
